For the good side:
1 main character; toughened by hard times but vulnerable
2 friends or siblings; loyal and ever supportive 
An assorted bunch of family and friends; each with their own knowledge and love to impart 
At least one if not two discover your strengths and inner power moments

For the bad side:
1 annoying entity; seeped till strong and evil
A generous sprinkling of minions of said annoying entity; the ghastlier, the better
A time based event; critical to all concerned; everything is building up to this.
At least three complications to keep it interesting
Multiple situations where the good guys are tested to breaking, but eventually push through

For the garnish: 
Beautiful vistas that allow for some breath easy moments
A loving loyal and goofy pet.
